Muntigunung Batik Scarves

In the remote hamlet of Pendem Kaja in Muntigunung, Indonesia, these beautiful scarves are handcrafted with passion.

They are a product of a social enterprise which trained a group of 15 community members in the traditional craft of 'Batik Tulis'.

The most traditional type of batik is called batik tulis (hand-drawn batik), where patterns are drawn with pencil and redrawn with hot wax using canting (a pen-like instrument consisting of a small copper reservoir with a spout on a wooden handle). The whole process of making batik tulis is complex and time-consuming. 

This is part of a holistic poverty eradication program.
